Shoes replace bags as the hottest fashion item

By Nagelv at 2011-01-01 15:11:47
It's goodbye to the Roxanne with the Giselle and hello to the Suri plus the Amy: 'it-shoes' are about to replace 'it-bags'.

The kinds of uncommon patterns and supplies associated lately with bags are being emulated the season in footwear, with innovative designs such as Marc Jacobs backward heels and also Chanel knee-high gladiator sandals. It is being forecasted that ladies will be investing in fewer but more expensive footwear; and there is a growing trend to title shoes after famous people, just as Luella Bartley known as her tote after the supermodel Giselle.

Italian designer Giambattista Valli made the Victoria footwear for Mrs Beckham; then Calvin Klein's Suri gives a name with Tom Cruise's child; and the Amy footwear - a best of Ms Winehouse - has aided to release Jonathan Kelsey's label. 'I desired to name my footwear,' said Kelsey, 'and as it was my very first collection I named all with the letter A. I chose the names of ladies who I desired to put on them - and Amy wore them to death.'

Kelsey has just shown his first footwear collection for Mulberry - a sign which the British brand name synonymous with 'it-bags' is diversifying into footwear. 'They've wanted to do shoes for a while,' said Kelsey, 'and they've picked up quickly on what's going on within the market. They desire to do with footwear what they have done with bags.'

Certain 'it-shoes', for example the Tribute stiletto by popular Yves Saint Laurent, that has been worn by Gwen Stefani as well as Jennifer Lopez, are selling out fast. Department store Harvey Nichols says a 15 % rise in footwear sales this season and a higher demand for current fashion trends heels - the towering footwear which models put on in the fashion shows - than 'selling' heels, the shorter, tamer models normally sold in shops. Many of the footwear we are selling have 140mm heels,' says Joanna Jeffreys of Harvey Nichols. 'Some seasons ago, 100mm seemed high. People are purchasing into new brands. We have displayed Alejandro Ingelmo's Terminator. It's 140mm high, it is fierce, and we've only got a pair left.'

A study by Mintel last week predict an 18 percent fall in handbag sales, which has been the fastest-growing extras sector of recent years. It also predicted that, when ladies are going to buy 7 percent fewer designer shoes and bags annually over the next five years, more shoppers will invest in more costly shoes and bags.

Sophia Neophitou-Apostolou, an editor-in-chief of Ten and a self-revealed 'shoe pig', is impatiently awaiting the arrival in-store of the season's Balenciaga gladiator shoes. She says 'it-bags' became too linked to certain seasons, in order that the hefty price tags they'd restricted use. 'Shoes are less of a good investment than a ? 2,000 bag that is worn by every star,' she mentioned.

Austyn Mayfield, in-house design expert at web site Shoetube, where women can post shoe videos and blogs, said:' Instead of spending money on a single patent bag and exotic skin clutch, a girl can take the same sum and commit to many pairs of shoes.'

But for the fashion's excitement for the 'it-shoe', will this ever dominate such as the 'it-bag'? 'I consider it will pan out differently to the it-bag tendency,' states Kelsey. 'Not everyone can put on a 120mm platform. As a designer, you ought to provide the shoe in different heights and models; there'll need to be a wider variety of styles. There are much more things to consider - all the design will have to be different. The challenge is going to be finding the right balance.'

A quick survey of Friday afternoon consumers in Selfridges in London's Oxford Street discovered the public is yet to be convinced. One consumer admiring a Fendi Black handbag said: 'I used to acquire good shoes; today I acquire good hand bags. They make me feel much more self-confident.'

A girl browsing in the shoe department said that the new season shoes 'are very pretty, but if I needed to make a decision I'd spend some money on a bag'. One more, who was examining this season's Prada collection, also said she decided on bags over shoes. She's not attracted by the 'it-shoes'? 'Not with my calves, dear.'
